Linda Hickson, Ph.D., Professor Emerita served as Professor of Education at Teachers College, Columbia University from 1979 to 2013. As long-time coordinator of the programs in intellectual disability/autism, she taught and mentored many masters and doctoral students preparing for careers in the education of people with disabilities. In addition, she directed several international initiatives to enhance the educational opportunities of people with disabilities in countries such as Ireland, Qatar, and Cyprus. She has published numerous chapters and research articles on a wide array of topics, including theoretical and applied aspects of decision making in people with disabilities. More recently, her research has focused on finding ways to reduce the social vulnerability of adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism by increasing their ability to make effective self-protective decisions. Dr. Hickson, with her collaborator, Dr. Ishita Khemka, conducted a series of projects, funded by the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, the Williams Syndrome Association, and the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, that resulted in the development and evacuation of ESCAPE-NOW- a decision making curriculum to decrease the vulnerability of women and men with intellectual and developmental disabilities- and PEER-DM- a decision making program to decrease the peer victimization of adolescents with intellectual disabilities and autism.

Ishita Khemka, Ph.D., is Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Programs in Special Education at St. John’s University, New York. She has extensive experience in teacher preparation, program evaluation, and implementing grant-funded training projects. With a strong commitment to inclusion and equity for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, she has initiated several innovative programs and community partnerships. The most notable has been the creation of a college immersion program in New York City for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities with an emphasis on the arts, social justice, and self-determination. Her research has significantly advanced the study of interpersonal decision making in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders. She has been the lead author of two decision making-based prevention programs (ESCAPE-NOW and PEER-DM) for reducing social vulnerability and maltreatment in adults and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Developed as part of a series of grant projects with her collaborator, Dr. Linda Hickson, these prevention programs are widely used in many countries and exemplify high-quality, evidence-based practices for abuse prevention.

Mireille Tabin, Ph.D, is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Zurich (Institute of Education, Chair of Special Education). Her research focuses mainly on (1) enhancing our understanding of the underlying mechanisms and risk factors contributing to behavioral problems and/or victimization in people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) and (2) developing evidence-based strategies for reducing the risk of interpersonal violence in people with IDD. Mireille was awarded a Fellowship and was a visiting researcher at St. John's University, New York, from October 2021 to September 2022. She collaborated with Dr. Ishita Khemka and Dr. Linda Hickson to develop a Research-based Intervention to reduce maltreatment risks in individuals with IDD.
