ESCAPE NOW
What is ESCAPE-NOW?
ESCAPE-NOW: The Effective Strategy-Based Curriculum for Abuse Prevention and Empowerment for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities - NOW (Khemka & Hickson, 2015) is the culmination of a series of research and curriculum-development efforts by Ishita Khemka, Linda Hickson, and their colleagues. It builds upon earlier versions of the curriculum, ESCAPE (Khemka & Hickson, 2002) and ESCAPE-DD (Khemka & Hickson, 2008). ESCAPE-NOW, based on current research and theory in abuse prevention and decision making, is designed to meet the need for an up-to-date, effective, evidence-based abuse prevention curriculum to teach women and men with intellectual and developmental disabilities to make effective, self-protective decisions in a wide range of sexual, physical, and verbal abuse situations. The development and field-testing of ESCAPE-NOW was funded in part by a grant from the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC). Key contributions were made by the ESCAPE-NOW Advisory Board and AHRC New York City and Morris CARES and Finding Your Individuality in New Jersey, whose staff and participants with developmental disabilities implemented the field test.
The ESCAPE curriculum is widely used, not only in the United States, but also in Canada, and in Sweden.
It has also been translated and adapted in French and is now used in Switzerland.
